Why Elope in Maui?

The second-largest Hawaiian island is wildly exotic. Wherever you go, there is the majestic beauty of spectacular waterfalls, lush forests, rocky coves, volcanoes, and more. One of the best parts of having a Maui elopement is that it provides the best tropical wedding, and you get to embrace Hawaiian culture as the people of Maui are all cheerful and welcoming.

This place offers couples the best of everything, from superb cuisine and famous hotels to endless activities, and amazing culture. And the best part – the aloha spirit that makes it super friendly and a laid-back place to tie knots.

The Hawaiian island is the perfect destination to wed and plan your honeymoon soon after. We can help you find the best places to elope and understand more about the legalities and everything required to spend the best time with your partner. So, let’s delve into the details:

Things to consider when planning your Maui elopement

  • All beaches are public, but not all beaches are open to weddings. For example- Ka'anapali beach is strictly off-limits for ceremonies and photographers. So if you are planning to tie the knot at any of the resorts in Kaanapali, just remember that you cannot take photos across the beach.

  • Summertime is the best to tie the knot in Maui as it is not as crowded as winter. Summers here are sunnier and warm, and for the same reason, elopements at sunrise are great ideas.

  • The island is very windy, so be sure to test your hairstyle. There would be no point ending up with all the hair on your face during the photos. A good rule is to opt for an updo instead of letting your hair fly around.

  • Keep lighting in mind when choosing a venue and time of the day for your Maui elopement. The best light occurs at 8.30-9 am or 1-2 hours before sunset. The evening will allow for the perfect golden hour shots, and the morning will give you a soft blue tone of water and sky in the photos.

Legalities

Yes, certain legalities are involved when you are planning to get married in Maui. It's just like any other destination where you need a marriage license. But this procedure is known to be rather simple, so you don't have to panic. The most important thing to remember is not to make it a last-minute thing.

Before your Maui elopement, you’ll be required to make an appointment with an agent of the state. The application can be filed and paid online. Going through the online method is the easiest way to tie up with legal activity and apply for the marriage license you need. To keep it as a memory, you may also fill out a paper version and take a print of it. On the day of the appointment, make sure to bring the following:

  • Printed receipt of the online application form or the paper application you have filled out.

  • Driver's license, military ID, or passport.

  • $70 or receipt of the online payment made.

Both people applying for the marriage license must be present on the day of the appointment. You must also have an officiant registered with Maui as minister of state; otherwise, it won't be legal.

Note: The license expires 30 days after being issued, and you must bring the license with you for the ceremony. There are many agents on Maui, and they book up quickly, so make sure to have your appointment booked on time.

Marriage permits

Did you know that you need a beach permit before planning your Maui elopement? If you are planning to get this document yourself, here is how to go about it:

Firstly, decide on the ceremony location and then apply online to get your permit. The cost is $20 for 200 sq ft, and you may be charged an extra $0.10 for every additional square foot. With this, you can invite up to 30 guests, granting you two hours to tie the knot.

Please note you are also not allowed to have alcohol or place large decor on the beach. You are also not allowed to place chairs on the beach, as they are only permitted for the specially-abled or elderly.

How to Reach Maui?

You can easily reach the island by air, and we recommend that you make your bookings in advance because the ticket pricing varies wildly depending on the time of the year. You will likely fly into Oahu and then take a short plane trip to Maui. If you want to save time, then you can also fly directly. The most expensive times are December through February since this is the most popular tourist period.

Once you arrive on the island, you can rent a car, allowing you to discover the place more conveniently. You may get a car with an open roof or a jeep, although taxis and Ubers are also available transportation options.

Note: The traffic on the island can get a little crazy, so we always recommend beginning your exploration tour early in the morning.

When to Elope & Weather Conditions

The tourist season is essential to consider when planning your Maui elopement. It is the time when you should be mentally prepared for the crowds and added expenses. So, we recommend planning during the off-season, which means eloping between March-November. In addition, aim for a weekday for tying the knot, as it cuts down on the number of tourists and provides added privacy for the two of you.

When it comes to the weather, Maui is a delight. It's a tropical rainforest region, so be prepared for the wind and rain. Even in the worst downpour, the temperature remains warm, and the sun often shines. Make sure to carry umbrellas as it's necessary. Still, if you are looking for the perfect weather, April to October are the best times.

Traditional Hawaiian Ceremony Ideas

Your Maui ceremony can be beautiful and unique, just like the landscape around you. There are several traditional ideas that you can incorporate into your day and make it meaningful. Some of these are:

  • You can include the spirit of Aloha into your elopement and make it a memorable affair. You will likely begin with the ancient Hawaiian tradition of blowing the pu conch shell. It announces the beginning of an auspicious occasion and is then followed by the wedding chant-

"Oli Aloha" prepares for blessing and welcoming the couple and their guests. The ring exchange is followed with a blessing involving Koa wood, a Ti leaf, and water representing prosperity, good health, and new beginnings.

Leis are an integral part of the traditional Hawaiian ceremony because it represents love, so brides are presented with pikake leis – jasmine or pink Lakeland rose, and the grooms are presented with Ti leaf leis. They represent endless love, and one of the unique moments of the ceremony is placing these on each other.

  • There is a "tie that binds" ceremony where the official ties your hands together with maile leis and chants an Oli, a Hawaiian chant. The chant speaks of peace, respect, and devotion. A sand ceremony is famous across the beaches where the mixing of sand symbolizes the bride and groom coming together.

  • There is also a Lava rock ceremony that honors connection and commitment. The lava stone symbolizes strength and is wrapped in a Ti leaf. It is left behind as an offering to nature to secure an everlasting union.

There are a lot of other ideas too, and you can choose to include all – or none! But since you have planned a Hawaiian elopement, why not bring the ancient magic to make your ceremony memorable?
